The Royal Court Theatre in London has recently revealed the winners of its inaugural Young Playwrights Award, showcasing the talents of six young writers aged 13 to 18. These budding playwrights will have the opportunity to see their works brought to life at the Royal Court’s Jerwood Theatre Upstairs during a Festival scheduled for July 10 to 12, 2025.
The Festival will feature plays from both age categories, along with an Awards Ceremony, inviting schools across London to attend for a nominal fee. Additionally, the winning plays will be compiled into an anthology by Nick Hern Books, amplifying the reach and impact of these emerging voices in the theatrical realm.
The initiative was launched by the Royal Court Theatre to nurture playwriting among secondary school students, filling a gap where playwriting is not typically included in the standard curriculum compared to other forms of creative writing. This pilot program is set to expand nationwide in the future, fostering a new generation of playwrights.
The submissions spanned a wide spectrum of genres, from comedy and family drama to the surreal and fantastical, introducing themes such as ghosts, magical libraries, estranged relatives, and the complexities of modern life. The plays offer a fresh perspective on diverse topics, from the struggles of Black girlhood to a whimsical exploration of artificial intelligence.
Over 150 entries poured in from various corners of London, with a meticulous selection process resulting in 21 plays shortlisted by the Royal Court Theatre. These works were then meticulously reviewed by a panel of judges, highlighting the depth of talent and creativity displayed by young writers.
Beth Flintoff, the Associate Playwright and Young Writers Associate at the Royal Court, expressed admiration for the entrants’ imagination and writing prowess, emphasizing the joy and impact of reading their submissions. The exceptional quality of the shortlisted plays resonated with the judges, evoking a range of emotions from surprise to amusement.
David Byrne, the Artistic Director and CEO of the Royal Court Theatre, shared his excitement about the remarkable plays discovered through the selection process, eager to introduce these promising talents to a broader audience. The plays offer a glimpse into the future of theatre, showcasing innovative storytelling and diverse perspectives that resonate with contemporary audiences.
The winning plays in the Aged 13–15 category include Aasiya Nsubuga’s “Happily Haunted,” Marcos Byrne’s “Hello, My Name Is…,” and Leon Chin-Kemp’s “Library of the Imagination,” each offering a unique narrative that delves into themes of memory, identity, and adventure.
In the Aged 16–18 category, Sapphire Naggie’s “Bad Hair Day,” George McAree’s “Fox Hunt,” and Leo Simpe-Asante’s “Godot’s To-Do List” captivated the judges with their bold storytelling and thought-provoking themes, ranging from personal struggles to societal reflections.
