Andrew monologue (Act 3) — Beyond the Horizon
She’s used to me being away. She won’t object when she knows it’s best for her and all of us for me to go. You ask Rob. In a couple of years down there I’ll make my pile, see if I don’t; and then I’ll come back and settle down and turn this farm into the crackiest place in the whole state. In the meantime, I can help you both from down there. (_Earnestly_) I tell you, Ruth, I’m going to make good right from the minute I land, if working hard and a determination to get on can do it; and I _know_ they can! (_Excitedly--in a rather boastful tone_) I tell you, I feel ripe for bigger things than settling down here. The trip did that for me, anyway. It showed me the world is a larger proposition than ever I thought it was in the old days. I couldn’t be content any more stuck here like a fly in molasses. It all seems trifling, somehow. You ought to be able to understand what I feel.
