THE TALE: The eccentric Elwood P. Dowd insists on introducing his imaginary friend, Harvey, an imposing six-and-a-half-foot rabbit, to unsuspecting guests at a high-class social gathering. This proves to be the final straw for his exasperated sister, Veta, who can no longer bear his peculiar antics. In a desperate attempt to protect her daughter, Myrtle Mae, and their family’s reputation from further scandal, she resolves to commit him to a mental institution.
However, a hilarious mix-up ensues when Veta herself is mistakenly presumed to be insane after she confesses to the doctors that years of cohabiting with Elwood’s imaginary friend have led her to see the giant rabbit too! In a turn of events, the doctors commit Veta instead of Elwood, instigating a wild search for Elwood and his unseen companion when the truth unravels.
When Elwood appears at the institution in search of his lost friend, Harvey, it becomes evident that his seemingly benign delusion has influenced more than one of the medical professionals. It’s only in the end that Veta comes to a surprising realization – perhaps Harvey isn’t as troublesome as she initially thought.
