Darlinghurst Theatre Company, a stalwart in championing Australian artists for nearly three decades, continues its commitment to fostering new talent despite the challenges posed by recent events. While their physical doors may be temporarily shut, they remain steadfast in their mission to amplify the voices of emerging playwrights through innovative programs.
The Next in Line initiative, introduced last year, serves as a platform for aspiring writers to showcase their boundary-pushing works. Supported by a cultural grant from the City of Sydney, the program facilitates the development of new plays by seven talented writers across a diverse range of themes and genres.
Among the notable participants is Dylan Van Den Berg, a Palawa writer whose award-winning play delves into themes of colonialism and healing. Another standout is Jordyn Fulcher, exploring the societal constructs around women’s bodies in her compelling work.
Phoebe Grainer, Wendy Mocke, Saman Shad, Kirsty Marillier, and Moreblessing Maturure bring their unique perspectives to the stage with plays that tackle issues of cultural identity, family dynamics, feminism, and intercultural relationships.
With the recent appointment of Leila Enright as the head of new writing, Darlinghurst Theatre Company is poised to provide these emerging playwrights with a platform to collaborate with actors, directors, and dramaturgs, ensuring that their creative visions are brought to life on stage.
Amylia Harris, co-artistic director of the company, emphasizes the importance of investing in new voices and allowing space for these stories to be heard. She believes that the current pause in regular operations has provided an opportunity for thoughtful planning and development, leading to a more impactful theatrical experience for both artists and audiences.
Through the Next in Line program, these aspiring playwrights are given the time and resources needed to refine their works and bring them to fruition. Harris envisions a future where these plays will captivate audiences with their depth and creativity, contributing to the rich tapestry of Australian theatre.
As the theatre community eagerly anticipates the staging of these six new plays, the industry is reminded of the importance of nurturing emerging talent and providing them with the support they need to thrive. Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s commitment to fostering creativity and innovation sets a positive example for the Australian arts scene, ensuring that diverse voices continue to be heard and celebrated.
