Andrea James, a Yorta Yorta/Gunaikurnai playwright and director, is set to take the helm at Ilbijerri Theatre Company following the departure of Rachael Maza, who has led the company for nearly 18 years. The transition marks a significant shift in leadership at Australia’s oldest Indigenous theatre company. James’ journey in the performing arts traces back to the late ’90s when she performed with the Oogadee Boogadees, a clown troupe born out of Melbourne Workers Theatre. The late Uncle Bob Maza, a prominent figure in the Indigenous arts community, supported James and her colleagues during their early days.
Having graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1996, James witnessed the growth of Ilbijerri Theatre Company from its grassroots beginnings to a prominent player in the Australian theatre scene. Her involvement in seminal works like Jane Harrison’s “Stolen” and “Coranderrk: We Will Show the Country” solidified her reputation as a talented playwright and collaborator.
