Encore Theatre Company in Tasmania is facing allegations of a “widespread culture of sexual harassment” targeting young individuals. The accusations emerged during a risk assessment for a volunteer, Danny Gibson, who has a long history with the company and serves as a Launceston councillor.
The theatre company, established in 2008, has staged numerous productions and recently launched a youth theatre academy for children aged six to 18. However, concerns have been raised about alleged grooming incidents within the company, as revealed in documents from the Department of Justice.
Cr Gibson, a former mayor, has been implicated in inappropriate conduct towards young men in the theatre community. Multiple individuals have come forward, claiming unwanted advances and inappropriate interactions, including sexting with a school theatre student.
While Cr Gibson has denied the allegations, stating he has been a victim of character assassination, the Department of Justice’s risk assessment highlighted concerning behavior, prompting discussions about his future involvement in the theatre sector.
Encore Theatre Company has a code of conduct prohibiting sexual harassment and emphasizes the importance of maintaining a safe environment for all members. However, questions have been raised about the company’s handling of complaints, including an alleged attempt to enforce a non-disclosure agreement related to inappropriate behavior.
Despite the controversy, Encore Theatre remains committed to upholding standards of dignity and respect, as outlined in its Code of Conduct. The company has stated that ensuring the safety and well-being of its community members is a top priority.
Amid these allegations, concerns have been raised about the safety of children participating in the theatre academy. The company has emphasized its commitment to creating a secure and inclusive environment, with strict policies in place to safeguard vulnerable individuals.
Experts in the theatre industry stress the importance of consent and safe practices, particularly when working with young performers. Educating individuals on appropriate boundaries and power dynamics is crucial to preventing potential harm and ensuring a supportive and nurturing environment for all participants.
As the investigation unfolds and discussions continue within the theatre community, the spotlight remains on the need for accountability, transparency, and the protection of individuals, especially those most vulnerable in performing arts settings.
